America was formed in Washington, D.C., in 1970. The band's original lineup consisted of Gerry Beckley (vocals, guitar),Dewey Bunnell (vocals, guitar),and Dan Peek (vocals, guitar, bass). The band's name was inspired by the song "America" by Simon & Garfunkel.

America's first album, America, was released in 1971. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it spawned the hit singles "A Horse with No Name" and "I Need You". America's second album, Homecoming, was released in 1972. The album was also a critical and commercial success, and it spawned the hit singles "Ventura Highway" and "Sister Golden Hair".
