Dio was born in Nicaea, Bithynia (modern-day Turkey). He came from a wealthy and influential family. His father, Cassius Apronianus, was a Roman senator and governor of several provinces. Dio's mother, Julia Procula, was a descendant of the Roman emperor Trajan.
