The American Revolution was a pivotal event in world history, and it is impossible to overstate the importance of the documents that shaped the course of the revolution and the founding of the United States of America. Three of the most essential documents from this period are Common Sense, The Federalist Papers, and The Articles of Confederation.

Common Sense

Common Sense was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1776. It was one of the most influential pieces of writing in the lead-up to the American Revolution. Paine argued that the American colonies should declare independence from Great Britain and establish a new nation. He appealed to the common sense of the American people, arguing that they had the natural right to self-determination.

Common Sense was a huge bestseller, and it is estimated that over 500,000 copies were sold in the first year of publication. It helped to rally support for the American cause and played a major role in the decision to declare independence.

The Federalist Papers

The Federalist Papers were a series of 85 essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. They were published in The Independent Journal and The New York Packet between October 1787 and April 1788. The essays argued for the ratification of the new United States Constitution.

The Federalist Papers were written in response to the Anti-Federalists, who opposed the new Constitution. The Federalists argued that the new Constitution would create a strong and stable government that would protect the rights of the people. They also argued that the Constitution would promote economic growth and prosperity.

The Federalist Papers were highly influential in the debate over the ratification of the Constitution. They helped to persuade many people to support the new government, and they remain an important source of information about the intentions of the Founding Fathers.

The Articles of Confederation

The Articles of Confederation were the first constitution of the United States. They were adopted by the Continental Congress on November 15, 1777, and remained in effect until the ratification of the Constitution in 1789.

The Articles of Confederation created a very weak central government. The central government had no power to tax, raise an army, or regulate commerce. This made it difficult for the government to function effectively.

The Articles of Confederation were eventually replaced by the Constitution. The Constitution created a stronger central government that was able to address the problems that the Articles of Confederation had been unable to solve.

Common Sense, The Federalist Papers, and The Articles of Confederation are three of the most important documents in American history. They played a crucial role in the American Revolution and the founding of the United States of America. These documents provide a valuable insight into the minds of the Founding Fathers and the principles that shaped the American nation.
