Henry was born into a wealthy family in Hanover County, Virginia. He received little formal education, but he was a voracious reader and had a natural talent for oratory. He began his career as a lawyer, and quickly gained a reputation for his eloquence and persuasive skills. Henry entered politics in 1765, when he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. He quickly became a leading voice in the colony, and was one of the first to call for independence from Great Britain.

In 1775, Henry was a delegate to the Continental Congress, where he played a key role in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. He was also a member of the Virginia Committee of Safety, which oversaw the colony's defense during the war. Henry served as Governor of Virginia during the Revolution, and was responsible for raising an army and defending the state from British invasion.

After the war, Henry retired from public life. He returned to his law practice, and lived a quiet life in Virginia. However, he continued to be active in politics, and spoke out against the new federal government. Henry died in 1799, at the age of 63.
