Early Life and Education

Marie Myung Ok Lee was born in Seoul, Korea, on December 1, 1935. Her father was a Presbyterian minister, and her mother was a schoolteacher. Lee grew up in a devout Christian household, and she was always taught to help others.

Lee came to the United States in 1956 to attend college. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree in social work from the University of Michigan.

Civil Rights Activism

Lee began her civil rights activism in the 1960s. She was involved in the fight for civil rights for African Americans, and she also worked to improve the lives of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

In 1973, Lee founded NAPAWF. NAPAWF is a national organization that works to improve the lives of AAPI women and girls. The organization provides a variety of services, including advocacy, research, and leadership development.

Lee's work with NAPAWF helped to bring about significant changes in the way that AAPIs are treated in the United States. She was instrumental in the passage of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Act, which established the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian American History. She also helped to create the Asian Pacific American Women's Leadership Institute, which trains AAPI women to become leaders in their communities.

Legacy

Marie Myung Ok Lee died on October 24, 2022, at the age of 86. She left behind a legacy of service and activism. She was a pioneer for AAPI women and girls, and her work helped to make the United States a more just and equitable place for all.

Lee's story is an inspiration to us all. It shows us that one person can make a difference in the world. We should all strive to follow her example and work to make the world a better place for all.
