The Mdantsane Project
In 1983, Fischer was appointed as project leader for the Mdantsane township near East London. Mdantsane was one of the largest townships in South Africa at the time, and its residents lived in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. Fischer's task was to design and build new housing for the township's residents.
Fischer's approach to the Mdantsane project was based on the principles of community engagement and affordability. She worked closely with the residents of the township to develop a design that met their needs and respected their cultural values. She also used innovative construction techniques to reduce the cost of the houses.
The Mdantsane project was a success, and it became a model for low-income housing in South Africa. Fischer's work earned her international recognition, and she was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1998.
Other Work
In addition to her work on the Mdantsane project, Fischer also designed and built other low-income housing projects in South Africa. She also taught architecture at the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand. She was also active in the promotion of gender equality in the field of architecture.
