He helped to negotiate the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which ended the war and recognized the independence of the United States.
After the war, Adams served as the first vice president of the United States under George Washington. He was elected president in 1797 and served one term. During his presidency, Adams faced a number of challenges, including the XYZ Affair and the Quasi-War with France. He also signed the Alien and Sedition Acts, which were controversial laws that restricted freedom of speech and the press.
Adams was defeated for re-election in 1800 by Thomas Jefferson. He retired to his home in Quincy, Massachusetts, where he wrote his autobiography and other works. Adams died on July 4, 1826, the same day as Jefferson.
